You know‚ one of my favorite analogies about making life decisions compares it to your position in a car.
Are you behind the steering wheel‚ making the decisions about where you want to go‚ how to handle detours or speed bumps and when to accelerate or slow down?
Or are you on the passenger side‚ content to let someone or something—luck‚ Fate or whatever—direct your course?
When you’re the passenger (in life as well as in a vehicle) you have minimal control over the trip. And as the guest experts on my show, Take Charge of Your Life (on the VoiceAmerica network), have reiterated, being in charge is one of the keys to success.
While you can’t control everything that happens on your life trip—detours, road construction or unexpected dead ends—you can do some pre-planning to help you on your way.
If you need help in moving to the driver’s side in your life, start by conducting some “itinerary research”:
- Is there road construction (translation: logistical or relationship issues that need addressed) ahead? If so, how do you plan to handle them?
- Is your “car” ready for what might be a length trip? In other words, have you prepared for the time and energy that will be expended?
- And most importantly, do you know where you want to go—and why you want to get there? Or are you relying on someone else’s idea for your life or your own fantasy that has little connection with reality?
